System: Breast: Ductal: Neoplastic: DCIS involving Sclerosing Adenosis
DCIS involves the compressed ducts of sclerotic adenosis. Note the fibrotic stroma. In usual sclerotic adenosis, the ductular lining is bland.
Sclerosing adenosis is a proliferative breast disease without atypia, and is associated with a relative risk of developing carcinoma of approximately 1.5 to 2x.
However, one must be aware that LCIS and/or DCIS can involve sclerosing adenosis.
There is some data to suggest that patients with DCIS in sclerosing adenosis should be closely monitored by radiologic and pathologic examinations to detect contralateral lesions, which may be more frequent in this population.
