IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS

The lesion consists of variable sized vascular spaces lined by attenuated endothelial cells. Intervening fibrosis is present in the stroma.

CLINICAL

Cavernous hemangioma is the most common primary hepatic tumor, arising from endothelial cells of blood vessels. Occur most frequently in middle-age women. Incidental finding, but during pregnancy (or with estrogen therapy), these lesions can enlarge rapidly. Focal nodular hyperplasia and cavernous hemangiomas can occur in conjunction and may be associated (1).

TREATMENT

None necessary; if symptomatic (pain, rupture), surgical excision would be appropriate.

PROGNOSIS

Excellent. Usually an incidental finding.
