IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS

Dermal based lesions with scattered ducts of different shapes. There are varying degrees and complexity of micropapillary infoldings.

There are micropapillary infoldings in the larger ducts while the smaller ducts lack this feature. The surrounding stroma is dense and becoming hyalinized.

BACKGROUND

Papillary eccrine adenomas are benign glandular tumors that arise in the dermis. They are composed of two cell layers: the innermost lining is of cuboidal secretory cells and the outermost of myoepithelial cells. The inner lining may have varying degree and complexity of papillary projections. The stroma shows varying degrees of fibrosis and is occasionally hyalinized.

CLINICAL

Papillary eccrine adenomas are classically characterized as occurring in the extremities of women. There appears to be no age predilection.

TREATMENT

Surgical excision with clear margins is the treatment of choice.

PROGNOSIS

These are benign lesions that rarely recur.
