Grossly inapparent microscopic cysts or lakes present in the chorion laeve (extra-placental membranes) of the placenta. At least 3 microcysts are required to make the diagnosis.
Significantly associated with:
Pre-eclampsia (29.6% vs 7.8%)
Maternal diabetes mellitus (8.7% vs 5.1%)
Decidual vasculopathy (33.7% vs 14.6%)
Global hypoxic patterns (21.5% vs 11.7%)
Infarction (22.7% vs 14.2%)
Chorangiosis (18% vs 7.8%)
Laminar necrosis of membranes (22.1% vs 9%)

Based on these associations it has been felt that the cysts are induced by hypoxia.
