BACKGROUND

Grossly inapparent microscopic cysts or lakes present in the chorion laeve (extra-placental membranes) of the placenta. At least 3 microcysts are required to make the diagnosis.

Significantly associated with:

Pre-eclampsia (29.6% vs 7.8%)

Maternal diabetes mellitus (8.7% vs 5.1%)

Decidual vasculopathy (33.7% vs 14.6%)

Global hypoxic patterns (21.5% vs 11.7%)

Infarction (22.7% vs 14.2%)

Chorangiosis (18% vs 7.8%)

Laminar necrosis of membranes (22.1% vs 9%)

(Stanek)

Based on these associations it has been felt that the cysts are induced by hypoxia.
